There are eight universities and several dozen colleges in Israel, which are recognized and academically supervised by the Council for Higher Education in Israel.
The primary difference between a university and a college in Israel is that only a university can confer doctorate degrees, and therefore it tends to be more research-oriented than the more teaching-oriented colleges.
The following is a list of Israel's eight Universities:
- Bar Ilan University
Bar Ilan University is located in Ramat Gan. It has a diverse student body of 18,000 students in its main campus. Its emphasis is on basic Jewish Studies and Jewish identity combined with modern technology, research and high-level academic studies. - Ben Gurion University of the Negev
Ben Gurion University, located in Beer Sheva of southern Israel, is considered a leader in new technology. Its population of 17,000 in 2008 consisted of students from Israel as well as many from around the world. The tuition is determined yearly. It offers programs in English with bachelors, Ph.D., M.D., and Master of Science and business administration degrees. Scholarships are available through the Dean's Office and the Jewish Agency. - Hebrew University
The student body of Hebrew University is about 23,500. It grants Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and doctoral degrees. Proficiency in English is required. The university's departments include Business Administration, Dental Medicine, Education, Engineering and Computer Science. It has the largest collection of Hebraica and Judaica in the world. The university's Professor Robert Aumann won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2005. - Technion
The Technion is a selective university and is one of the leading institutes in hi-tech industry in the world. It is known for research and teaching as well as biotechnology, civil and environmental engineering. Located on Mt. Carmel overlooking the Mediterranean Sea near Haifa, the university is in a desirable, picturesque area. Two of its professors have recently won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. It has an exchange student partnership with participating universities and runs a high school summer research camp. - Tel Aviv University
Tel Aviv University has a student population of 13,817. It offers degrees in medical studies, law, engineering, arts, humanities, accounting, biology, chemistry, physics, computer science and pharmacology. The university has exchange programs with other universities. International fees in US dollars were $21,063 a year in June 2010. - University of Haifa
University of Haifa is the only liberal arts school in northern Israel. It has a diverse population of 16,800. English is spoken in the Honors Program in Psychology and the Honors Program in Peace and Conflict Studies. It is open to international students who have completed one year at home with a GPA of 3.0. It also is known for programs in the humanities, law, social welfare, health education and its graduate school of management. - Weizmann Institute
Weizmann Institute, an international center for scientific research and graduate study, has a student body of 2,500 students. The Feinberg Graduate School offers Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees preparing students for senior positions in academia, research and industry. - Ariel University
The Ariel University previously known as the Ariel University Center of Samaria is a university located in the West Bank. Before becoming a university, it was the largest Israeli public college.
In the 2012 Academic Ranking of World Universities, three of Israel's universities made the top 100 list: the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 53rd place, the Technion Institute of Technology in 78th place, and the Weizmann Institute of Science in 93rd place.
